Biography

Chiamonwu Joy, born on the 1st of December 1995, is a native of Anambra state in Nigeria. She is a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria, with a BA.Ed in English Education.

Chiamonwu Joy embraced her passion for art at the age of 8 when she began to draw cartoons on her sketch books and for her elementary school friends, out of sheer passion.

In 2006 - 2012, she attended Saint John's College in Maiduguri, Borno state, Nigeria where she grew up to be a very ambitious and talented teenager who in spite of not having an art teacher, took the bold step of being the only student in her academic school to partake in the Fine and Applied Art examination of the West African Examination Council - a final examination for the senior year high school students of West Africa.

Chiamonwu Joy realised her intense interest in Hyperrealism - a contemporary art genre - in 2014 when she decided to specialize in the use of graphite and charcoal pencils on paper as her medium for creating painstaking and extensively detailed artworks she feels strongly for. And through constant practice, perseverance and determination, she has mastered the art of extensive creativity.

Her attraction to the traditional and cultural values of the African people can be seen and felt by all and sundry as her artworks mainly focus on exploring and immortalizing these African values.

Chiamonwu is a victim and survivor of the Boko Haram Insurgency that took place in Maiduguri, Borno state, Nigeria in 2009 and 2011.

 

Artist Statement

I am an artist with a story. There is always a story behind every artwork I create.

I draw my inspiration from the rich and eloquent history, traditions, cultural values and practices of African people; and the theme of my artworks centres on bringing this inspiration to life and immortalizing it.

Every shade of charcoal I leave on my paper feels like love making and I am yet to reach the climax, my climax. Therefore, I do not only draw to attain the highest level of perfection in my skill but I also draw to satisfy my insatiable lust for creativity and to fulfil my aim in bringing change to the society by using my voice as an artist.
